Overview
Every BHMS student learns to differentiate Arsenicum album, Veratrum album and Podophyllum peltatum in acute diarrhoea — the restless, anxious, burning, thirsty-for-sips Arsenicum; the collapsed, cold-sweated Veratrum; the profuse, painless, gushing Podophyllum. These pictures are usually memorised from one book, and the differences between standard texts, and the link between each drug picture and the known toxicology of its source substance, are rarely examined.
This project is a structured comparative literature study. The three remedies are studied across five standard sources — Boericke's Pocket Manual, Allen's Keynotes, Kent's Lectures on Homoeopathic Materia Medica, Hering's Guiding Symptoms and Clarke's Dictionary — using a pre-designed extraction matrix (mind, physical generals, gastrointestinal symptoms, stool character, modalities, concomitants). Each symptom is coded, so agreement across texts can be counted rather than guessed. The key differentiating features are cross-checked against rubrics in Kent's Repertory.
For modern correlation, the documented effects of the source substances are reviewed from standard pharmacology and toxicology references: arsenic trioxide poisoning (gastroenteritis with rice-water stools, dehydration, circulatory collapse), veratrum alkaloids such as veratridine (sodium-channel opening, vomiting, bradycardia, hypotension, cold sweat) and podophyllin/podophyllotoxin (drastic purgation, antimitotic toxicity). The study reports where the classical drug picture and the toxicological profile correspond, where they do not, and what each text contributes — with inter-rater agreement (Cohen's kappa) on symptom coding to show that the comparison is reproducible.
